Agronomy, Crop modeling and Climate Change: Agronomic practices play a vital role in crop production. As global warming induced climate changes are affecting crop production and natural resources across the world. Hence, the prime focus of the department is to develop and introduce crop models and resource conservation techniques through precision agriculture and climate-smart agriculture in Punjab region.
Agri biotechnology: Biotic and abiotic stress plays a critical role in plant growth and yield. Hence various strategies are being deciphered for production of stress resilient crops. Further attempts are being made to understand the intricacies of root development and the modulation of root system architecture in plants. Research is also being pursued to enhance accumulation of secondary metabolites in important medicinal plants.
Plant Pathology (Plant Molecular Virology): Plant pathogens and insect attacks are detrimental to crop yield and productivity. Department focuses on the area of identification of different pathogens and insects, plant-microbe interaction, viral disease diagnostics and the development of stress-resilient crops.
Horticulture: The cultivation of horticultural crops has a huge potential in Punjab. It is been observed that the area for cultivation of horticultural crops is increased with every passing year. At present, the department is involved in the introduction of nontraditional crops and developing their agrotechnology. Further, the department aims at developing suitable technology for large-scale propagation of quality planting materials.
